THE Bandar Blacks recorded a well deserved 22-3 win over the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Sharks in the first game of the Brunei Senior Rugby League (BSRL) match last Saturday. The match, played at the UBD Sports Complex in Tungku link, was evenly contested in the early stages. Both teams were presented several scoring opportunities, only to be denied by desperate tackles from the opposing forwards.
It was the Blacks who struck first when Mohammad Azahar Awg Timbang busted through UBD’s defence to score the first try of the game at the 10-minute mark.
The score would read 5-0 to the Blacks after they failed to connect on the conversion.
The Sharks would respond quickly, capitalising on the Blacks’ violation during a ruck by scoring on a penalty to trail 5-3.
The game turned out to be a battle between forwards, with the Blacks coming up on top. They enjoyed a majority of possession and territory in the first half.
The Blacks continued to play aggressively and managed to increase their lead when winger Hasan Azahar Awg Timbang scored the second try for his team to give them a comfortable 10-3 advantage going into the second half.
The second half saw the Sharks struggle to maintain possession.
The Blacks, meanwhile, continued their impressive play, scoring two more tries before the final whistle.
The Blacks’ third try went to Mohammad Azahar while hard working flanker Ahmed Faez Anuar “Eazy Anuar” scored the final try of the game.
More impressive was that Ahmed Faez Anuar had to play two positions after the Blacks’ scrum half was red carded for a dangerous tackle in the 16th minute.
He played the majority of the game as scrum half, in addition to chasing after loose balls during the rucks while still making tackles.
The next match will be played on Saturday between the Kuala Belait Pythons and the Sharks at the Panaga Club in Kuala Belait.
These are the only three teams competing in this year’s edition of the Brunei Senior Rugby League tournament.
